Most people have a meticulous plot to how they eat a cupcake. Some will rip its paper wrapping quickly and without warning indulge themselves. While others prefer to take a delicate approach and peel it’s wrapping in parts as if pinching a fine piece of hair. Will you only eat the frosting? Will your cupcake be simple and to the point. Short and sweet if you will. Chocolate or vanilla? Maybe decadent with a red velvet cake?

If there is one thing New York City is known for, it is its wide assortment of delicious food. And yes, I put cupcakes in a food category. New York City’s Cupcake scene is starting over shadow its renowned bar scene. So lets forget that its bathing suit season for a moment, and talk cupcakes. From uptown to downtown, there are an array of bakeshops to be visited that specialize in cupcakes. Some are very well known and others not. Cupcakes have become so much of a craze lately, that they have taken over wedding cakes. Some brides and grooms have chosen a cupcake tower over the traditional tiered cake.

One of the most famous bakery’s in the city that is visited by locals and out-of-towners daily is Magnolia Bakery. Magnolia Bakery can be accessed very easily with its three locations: Greenwich Village, Rockefeller Center and the Upper West Side. Even though there are plenty of great places in NYC to find a satisfying cupcake, Magnolia’s is a top contender. Magnolias became popular as soon as its doors opened in 1996. Its owners had to change hours of operation to keep up with its racing demand for more cupcakes. It is not rare to see a long line outside Magnolias even after 10pm. Magnolias became an even large success when it was featured in an episode of Sex and the City. Magnolia Bakery has even become a stop on the Sex and the City tour that travels through Manhattan.

The only thing more sinful that the cupcakes it produces would be not mentioning Crumbs Bake Shop. If you like variety and options in your cupcakes, Crumbs is the place for you. At Crumbs, you are able to choose between three sizes of your favorite types of cupcakes. There signature cupcakes which are there largest option when it comes to size is something to write home about. Nothing makes a cupcake even more unique then having to take a fork and knife to it. With both classic and often times outrageous flavors of cupcakes, the selection is endless. Peanut butter and jelly cupcake anyone? Maybe Key lime pie?

While these are probably the most popular of all the cupcake bakeries in the city, there are a few hidden gems that are not as popular and even some that may have not even been discovered. If you can get over the mess cupcakes at home make in our already small city kitchens, I stand by the homemade kind of cupcakes any day.
