1) Business over Pleasure So a friend of mine confessed how she spent her last Valentine's day with her ex: the two of them stayed home, folded laundry, and watched the movie "Unfaithful"… with her ex's best friend. Awk-ward. What happened to a little love and affection? Romance should always be on the balance sheet of a relationship. It's the bottomline and once it goes, so will the rest. Romance can take naps, but it should never be dead. 2) Communication Cutoff In this city, some people treat their Blackberry's better than their kids. With all the ways to instant message, it shouldn't be hard to reach your boyfriend / girlfriend. Unreachability puts you at high risk. If it's been days since you've seen them. Or they never answer their phone. Or their once lengthy texts have been minimized to a few letters without punctuation ("sry hun call u later"). You may want a stock split … no, wait, I don't know what that is. You may want to split up. ASAP. 3) Very low interest rates Some relationships evolve to that low maintenance phase called love-me-the-way-I-am. Just be sure that low maintenance doesn't become no maintenance. Like how his love handles interfere with him tying his shoes. A stranger congratulates you and asks when your due date is. It's been months since the last haircut, shave, or bikini wax. You deserve someone who is blue chip stock – valued for high quality. If their value drops, chances are, so will your interest. 4) High Risk flirting So maybe this isn't "Sin City" or the "City of Angels." I like to think that New York falls somewhere in the middle. It's the city to flirt. Flirting should be included in the first amendment: all persons, single or attached, have the right to flirt. Most flirting can be considered low risk. Taking a coffee break and going to Starbucks with a cute co-worker, that's sharing stock tips. Taking tequila shots and going home with them, that's insider trading. 5) Lack of Trust Funds The little white lie is about as harmless as the little black dress. How can something so small have such a huge effect? Answer: it's what is beneath it that matters. Trust is key; you have to build it, use it, and know if it's broken. Is he really working 16 hour days and sleeping in his cubicle? Maybe. The stock market has gone to shit lately. More likely, he's working 16 hour nights and sleeping with his assistant. |
