Taking Woodstock Movie Poster

The summer movie season is still very much in full swing and while blockbusters such as “Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen” and “Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince” are set to dominate the box office, there are quite a few other films this summer that only few will see. Not every single film this summer will be released to a wide audience so here are a few little known films that moviegoers should keep their eye on when their traveling to the cinema in the next two months:

Away We Go Movie Still“Away We Go” directed by Academy Award Winning director, Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and starring The Office’s John Krasinski and Saturday Night Live alumni Maya Rudolph tells the story of a young couple struggling to find a place to settle down in the wake of the birth of their child. Reviews have generally been positive for this one and judging by Mendes’ past work (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road), this looks to be another grand slam for him.

Opens: Now playing.

(500) Days Of Summer Movie Still

“(500) Days of Summer” starring Zooey Deschanel (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (TV’s 3rd Rock from the Sun) is about a young man falling for a girl who doesn’t believe in true love as their story spans over the course of, you guessed it, 500 days. Director Marc Webb who is known for directing music videos from such musical acts as P.O.D. and My Chemical Romance makes his feature film debut here. All reviews for this one have been positive so far so don’t be shocked to see this independent feature become the sleeper hit of the summer.

Opens: July 17th’ 2009.

Shrink Movie Still

“Shrink” stars two-time Academy Award Winner Kevin Spacey as a famous mental health professional (or shrink) who deals with celebrities as his patients. After a recent tragedy, has lost all direction in his work and turns to marijuana to help him through life while meeting interesting people along the way that help change him forever. The ensamble cast of this 2009 Sundance Film Festival premiere also includes fellow Academy Award Winner Robin Williams as one of Spacey’s patients.

Opens: July 24th’ 2009.

Paper Heart Movie Still

Nicholas Jasenovec makes his feature film directorial debut with the comedy, “Paper Heart” starring the 23-year-old Charlyne Yi who co-wrote, produced, and composed the film. The half documentary style, half romantic comedy brings about a woman who attempts to produce a documentary about the complicated subject of love all the while meeting her soulmate. The film also stars Michael Cera of Superbad fame as the love interest and Seth Rogan, who is no stranger to Cera, makes an appearance in movie. Yi is a relatively newcomer to Hollywood so a positive response for this film could be the boost she needs to climb the rungs of the Hollywood ladder.

Opens: August 7th, 2009.

Taking Woodstock Movie StillOscar Winning Director Ang Lee returns with his first American made film since his award winning 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain” with “Taking Woodstock”. The film tells the story of a young man who tries to help land a permit for the legendary Woodstock music festival after the event is left abandoned. The cast includes Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Eugene Levy (American Pie). Actor Demetri Martin who is probably best known for his Comedy Central series, “Important Things with Demetri Martin” plays the lead in the film so keep a look out for this man. Could a breakthrough role starring in an award winning director’s film elevate Mr. Martin? Time will soon tell.

Opens: August 14th, 2009.
