![]() It is stating the obvious that we live in uncertain, anxious times when even the most prosperous among us may feel the ground a little shaky beneath the feet. It is, perhaps, all the more necessary for New Yorkers to have a place to relax where they can at least temporarily be shielded from the cares of the day. For those on the Upper West Side, Amsterdam Alehouse may be just such a retreat. The Alehouse functions on an English model where a pub is more than a place to eat or drink but is a community hub. It is a spot where the anonymity of the city can dissolve into a sense of warm sociability. Amsterdam Alehouse is located on the northwest corner of Amsterdam and 76th street. Its expansive entry on Amsterdam Avenue seems to invite West Siders into its warm, hearth-like environment. The lighting is mellow and the music is usually kept low to ensure a relaxed environment where conversation is possible. The bar itself is quite large and is manned by a friendly and intelligent staff who seem to take genuine interest in their customers. Consistent with an alehouse, the pub offers a draft and bottled beer list several pages long. The Alehouse is also a restaurant with an extensive menu consisting primarily of American, Italian and some Mexican dishes. The courses I have sampled I have found to be to be consistently well prepared and hearty. The entrees are $19.95 or less with the sandwiches and burgers hovering around $12. The restaurant also offers 12-inch pizzas whose ingredients can be personalized to a diner's specifications. The Alehouse's nacho order is generous and large enough for several to have a snack. There are also a number of dishes from which vegetarians may make a selection. For those who wish to dine with a minimum of distraction, the restaurant offers a separate room in the back away from the bar. Amsterdam Alehouse appears to be particularly popular for those attending concerts at the nearby Beacon Theatre on 72nd Street. It is also convenient for a meal or drink when viewing a play at the Vital Theatre Company on Broadway and West 79th. However, it is probably those who reside on the lower Upper West Side who will appreciate Amsterdam Alehouse the most. The atmosphere is most soothing during the early part of the week. Particularly during that period residents of the neighborhood will find the establishment a safe harbor where the ragged edge of the day is smoothed. |
