The Underground Parties of New York

The underground NYC techno scene is booming and finally seeing hope despite complaints of its demise.  People say that clubs have become generic – unlike the 1990s days of the Tunnel when Kraftwork and Derrick May injected electronic beats to the masses at the famous nightclub.  These accusations are wrong.   You can now find similar parties – you just need to do more research.  When demands stem from thousands of our nocturnal hedonists - the concrete jungle will always supply.

From boats to jungle style military camps to beaches and art gallery warehouses, techno party bashers have been raging it up at secret venues (disclosed only on the day of/a few days before the event) instead of nightclubs.  This is resonant to the 1990s secret warehouse party venue raver days.  Paired with line-ups of leading DJs found in mainstream clubs like Cielo or Pascha, you’ll find yourself grooving to them in Brooklyn’s industrial zones with similar state-of-art speakers, strobe lights and video installations abounding.  Here, you can break down with hundreds of revelers from 11 p.m. to noon or later the next day.  One party lasted from 11 p.m. on a Saturday until about 4 a.m. on a Monday.

“We hold the events at secret locations and only allow people who are members of our group to RSVP” says DJ Elon, one of the founders of ReSolute, a group that organizes underground techno parties with hundreds of faithful followers.  This surreptitiousness apparently encourages large and lasting attendance.  Though organizers rarely reject people at the door, they do remove them from their RSVP list, so they can’t attend the next event – techno-banishment may result from aggressive behavior or antagonism towards the techno music or it’s fans.

"By having secret locations, it gives a different experience for each party and makes them more exciting,” says DJ Connie, another founder of ReSolute.  “One of the best parties I went to was for ReSolute,” says Sherman Li, “when we got off a train in Bushwick, we had to wait in front of Falafel King, then a big white van picked us up and took us to a very industrial part of town.  We heard music, then went behind some warehouse – there the party was with hundreds of people – dancing on a boat without a captain."

Facebook is a powerful tool that has aided this underground techno scene, since you can become a member of these groups, get event alerts and buy tickets/RSVP for parties.  This electronic music underworld is also delivered to us by other leading event organizers: Essential; Biatch Corp.; and Decompression.  With rising competition between these party-planning groups, they have been finding more novel/unique venues to attract crowds – this includes throwing shindigs in an art museum to a former air base (Decompression).

With the ebb of underground clubs, our city’s techno partygoers have found a way to get around this with their private and secret location events.

1. Resolute
This techno group holds parties at secret venues disclosed only on the day of the event.  Backed by local and international DJs, you’ll find yourself dancing on boats, in warehouses, on beaches and in lofts.  Go to the ReSolute MySpace page or become a member of their group on Facebook for event alerts and to RSVP for parties.  Their next event is a joint event with BlkMarket Membership (see below) on Halloween.  .

2. Essential
A group that organizes techno parties with long line-ups of DJs both international and local.  They had an event that hundreds of people attended at a 7500 sq. ft. Soho private art gallery loft.  They feature sculptors, installation art, mixed media, spoken word and much more.  For alerts and information join their group on Facebook, their next event is on Saturday, October 17.  Also, see their website, you can also find them on MySpace or on Facebook

3. Biatch Corp.
A corporation that delivers underground global electronic music (mostly techno and house) parties with local and international DJs to NYC.  They are originally from Colombia, but their main headquarters are in NYC.  Their events are often held at secret locations and they once had an event at “a 5000sq. ft. military camp in the thick urban forest of Brooklyn,” according to the site Resident Advisor. Their website is available at http://www.biatchcorp.org/ and you can also find them on Facebook.

4. Decompression NYC
The annual Burning Man party that hundreds of people attend, and they encourage people to don costumes.   They have held events in art museums and warehouses.  They feature huge installation and visual art exhibitions, hold classes (including stilt walking and tattoo painting), a long line-up of local and international DJs, live bands and performers (like flame throwers and fire hula-hoopers). Although their parties are not located at secret venues, their parties are considered to be underground. For tickets and additional information go to the Decompression NYC website. Their next event is this Saturday, October 17 at a remote former air base deep in Brooklyn.
